The more things change, the more they stay the same (the key point of antiquity). The modern word today are not far different from the world of antiquity back then, therefore to understand the world today, we should understand the world back then. In this journal I will talk about four different worldview of time, which is the impersonal worldview where time is fated, the impersonal worldview where time is random, the impersonal worldview where time is cyclical, and the personal worldview where time is linear.
The impersonal worldview where time is ruled by fate define to us that there is order of time in the universe which is tied to fate and we have no power to change it. In the other word we are saying that we are design to our fate. We can say that fate is a machine that kept on going and doesn’t respond to any person’s order or control. This is a worldview to many of the civilization in the antiquity time, especially the Persian. For the self application, I can see that my life is actually not fated and when something in my life goes wrong, I have the power with God to change it. Fate is not the one who rules my life, but God and I is the one who rules my life.
The impersonal worldview where time is random defines to us that there is no order of time in this universe and that we can also do nothing to change it. In the other word we are saying that everything happens by luck and fortune only. This is also one of the worldview of the antiquity civilization, especially the Ancient Egyptians and the Mesopotamian. For the self application, I should belief that there is a true and power full God who is watching over my life so that I will always live a good life. God have arranged and prepare me a good life even when I’m still in my mother’s womb.
The impersonal worldview where time is believed as cyclical defines to us that time is a series of cycle that repeats itself, so we should just cease the moment when we have the chance to receive glory. This worldview is mostly the worldview of the Ancient Greeks. For the self application, I see that life is not just a series of cycle, and just live to gain popularity or to gain glory, but I realize that I have a purpose in this life which I am created for.
The personal worldview where time is linear defines to us that we as the creation of God each have a different and unique purpose in this life. In the other word, we say that God have called us one by one to a different purpose in this life and history is personal and determined by personal choices, community choices, family choice, and the choice continues until there is consequences. This worldview is the worldview of the Christianity until today. For the self application, I should see time as a line that flow in the control of God and that everything I do today have the consequences in my future life. I should learn from the past to understand the present and to prepare for my future life.
For the conclusion, the more things change, the more they stay the same (the key point of antiquity). The modern word today are not far different from the world of antiquity back then, therefore to understand the world today, we should understand the world back then. . I should learn from the past to understand the present and to prepare for my future life.
