Mesopotamian Literature and Government

In the Humanities class today, we learn about the Mesopotamian literature and governments. The purpose of studying the Mesopotamian is to understand that the worldviewthat we practice today, have existed since four-thousand year ago. The Mesopotamian civilization has very business minded worldview. They mostly think about gaining profits in all they do. Their worldview of business minded also make a great affect especially on their literature. In this journal I will talk about three main points to understand the Mesopotamian literature which are, literature itself, the commercial records, and also the other Mesopotamian literature.

Literature is one of the most important subjects in educations. Studying Literature mostly requires us to read books and study the book. The purpose of studying literature is to understand values and principle from the other culture, and we also study Literature to understand the worldview in the story and of other culture or civilizations; therefore, a nation without culture is a nation with no soul. For the self application, Literature is the most challenging subject for me because I need to read books. For me, reading books is the most boring things to do that I obviously can’t enjoy. I must try to see the Literature and reading books in a different perspective. I must not see it as something boring and not enjoyable, but I am to see that reading books will help me to expand my vocabulary and also to understand that I need to be grateful of what I have in my culture comparing to other cultures. It can also change my worldview to a better one so that I could live better and better everyday.

The pieces of literature in from the Mesopotamian civilization were written in the clay table. Ninety-nine percent of the literature that was written on the clay table was all about commercial records about trades, richness, profit they gained and all about business. The pieces of the literature they kept were mostly worthless records, with no character building, in the other word, empty. For the self application, I realized that if I only keep records that don’t worth anything, I will not be remembered of anything. Now I understand why literatures are very important to remember stories and great things people have done in the past.

Beside the commercial records, there are still some other records that the Mesopotamian civilization kept. Some of these records are genealogies, military achievements, and few mythical narratives. Some of these records are memorable but there were only a few of them. For the self application, I can see that characters have the least concern also similar to the world today. I need to build my self inside out, but not outside in; therefore, character should be my priority.

For the conclusion, the purpose of studying the Mesopotamian is to understand that the worldview that we practice today, have existed since four-thousand year ago. The Mesopotamian civilization has very business minded worldview. They mostly think about gaining profits in all they do. Their worldview of business minded also make a great affect especially on their literature. I need to train my self to read more books, because I realized that stories are very important in order to be a significant person later in the future.
