According to the dictionary, History is the study of past events. There are many reasons why history is important and we should study it. Among them are to learn the past mistakes and not to repeat them again, to know our identity or origin, and the human development.
We need to learn from the past mistakes so that we will not repeat the same mistake again in the future. For example in the history of Indonesia, our people were selling our natural resources for a low price because at that time, our people were lack of education. So now we need to educate our people so that our people can earn more benefit out of the trade. For my self application, I need to write daily diaries that I can pass them to the next generation. I will write all solutions I have found to a problem in life also all my experiences so that my next generation will be able to follow my right solution to a problem and they can develop it. I will also write mistakes that end up in problems in my life so that my next generation will not be in the problem that I have experienced in my life.
It is impossible to understand the world today if we don’t understand our past. Without understanding the world today, we will not be able to change our nation. Therefore, without understanding the history, we will not be able to change our nation today. History is very important in order for us to change our nation. We need to understand the background of our nation and the origin. History is not only for changing our nation, but it’s also to understand why we are here and who we are. For the self application I just understand that how important the heraldry project that we had 2 years ago. From that project I learned so many things about me from my ancestors’ time. If I have a spare time, I will give more effort to continue my research about my heraldry. I really want to know why I’m here today, and who am I. I will also study deeper about my nation’s history so that I have learned from experience my country had and when God give me a chance to be a leader for my nation, I will lead base on that experience.
For me, history is also important so that we know how the civilization of the human being has developed. Today there are many new innovations especially the new born technologies that will keep on developing each day. For example, at the old days, we can see that the war was only using swords and horses for majority, but today we have guns that substitute the swords, and tanks substituting the horses. In self application, I can see that technologies will not stop upgrading, updating, and developing, so I learned that it will be very difficult to follow trends. For example, yesterday the hand phone that was in trends is brand “A” series “3”, than the today the trends will be brand “D” series “2”, maybe tomorrow will be another type. If we keep on following trends we will always be out of date, unless we change our hand phones every time the trends change.
History is important for us to learn so many things. History is more important than other subject like math and science. Math and science will be worthless without history, but with it, people will be able to invent innovation that will benefit someone’s life. I wish to learn more about history knowing how important it is.
