The Fertile Crescent, Mesopotamia

Mesopotamia is known as the Fertile Crescent that exists at around 3000 BC and 500 BC. Mesopotamia was a very important trade route because it has a very fertile soil. I will discuss the three main ideas that I get in the Humanities lecture about the ancient Mesopotamia. The three main ideas are about the Sumerian civilization and flood, education, and the Chaldean civilization.

The Sumerian civilization is the first civilization that developed in the land of Mesopotamia. It develops around 3000 BC to 2500 BC. This civilization only thinks about business and money. The Sumerian civilization was located on the southern part of the Mesopotamia. The Mesopotamia has two sites, which are the southern and the northern site and they both are easily flooded. The northern flood was caused by the melting glacier on top of the mountain. On the other hand, the southern get flooded because of heavy rainfalls. These floods cause both good and bad effect to the Mesopotamian. It makes the soil in Mesopotamia very fertile, but the flood was unpredictable. For the self application, I can learn from the flood that I must pay the price for something good. I can see that though the flood makes the soils fertile, but it can come anytime causing bad effect for people.

The education was not really fair in the civilization. The educations are only for the rich and only for men. The educations are very strict though their purposes are only for accomplishment and performance. They never think about the character building or the process by beating up the student. We can conclude that they are following the revolutionary ideas. For the self application, I know that I should be grateful for my education today. It’s a good thing that I don’t live back then, where it’s not a fair place to live in.

The Chaldean was also one the civilization of the Mesopotamian and this civilization are the last of all. Chaldean civilization developed at around 600 BC to 500 BC. They are the one who are rebuilding the Babylonian city and the Ziggurats around them and make Babylon their capital. They slaves that work for them are not their own people, but the people they captured from the war. Their purpose of war back then was only for money and to have more slaves. The Chaldean empire was led by King Nebuchadnezzar, and they were the first to build the hanging garden. The hanging garden is mostly understood as the place of executions, but it’s a garden that has water that was pumped up or something we call fountain today. For the self application, I can see again that humans are trying to build gardens so that they could feel that peace as men were created in the Garden of Eden. They are also trying to build fake mountains like the ziggurats which have the shape of mountain.

Mesopotamia is known as the Fertile Crescent that exists at around 3000 BC and 500 BC. Mesopotamia was a very important trade route because it has a very fertile soil. It begins with the Sumerian civilization and later ends with the last civilization, the Chaldean civilization. There are still many things we can learn from the Mesopotamian civilization. They are the first civilization which makes an impact on the human civilization.
